How Does Laser Hair Removal Work?
Laser hair removal works on the scientific principle that laser energy is absorbed and converted to heat by dark materials. In the case of hair removal, the laser heats up and damages the melanin (pigment) in the hair follicle but leaves the surrounding skin intact (as it’s usually lighter in colour). Minimising damage to the surrounding skin is also dependent on the skill of the clinician or laser technician.
In the early days of laser hair removal in Sydney (late 1990s), treatment was usually only performed on clients with pale skin and dark hair. The Candela GentleMAX Pro and the Fitzpatrick Scale
The Candela GentleMAX Pro laser hair removal machine used at our Sydney clinic provides two wavelength options: 755 nm (for skin types 1 – 3) and 1064 nm (for skin types 4 – 6).
- Skin Type 1 – white skin (burns easily and never tans)
- Skin Type 2 – fair skin (burns easily and rarely tans)
- Skin Type 3 – beige skin (prone to mild burning and experiences some tanning)
- Skin Type 4 – light-brown skin (tans easily and rarely burns)
- Skin Type 5 – brown skin (tans easily and never burns)
- Skin Type 6 – black skin (tans easily and never burns)
